Notre Dame Drops Third Straight to Houston, 54-65

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost their third straight game against Houston, 54-65. Tae Davis led the way for the Irish in scoring, finishing with 22 points on 9-15 shooting. The poor shooting and a six minute scoring drought led to the eleven-point loss.

The starting line up for the Irish remained the same with one change: Braeden Shrewsberry, Matt Allocco, Tae Davis, Kebba Njie and Logan Imes getting the start replacing Markus Burton, who is out on a week-to-week basis after suffering a knee injury early in the game against Rutgers.

The Irish trailed 13-17 at the 11:46 mark in the first half. Davis had the hot hand and had seven early points.

At the 7:11 mark, The Irish trailed 15-21. Coach Shrewsberry let the refs hear it at the media timeout, and was visibly upset at several no calls.

Heading into the half, Notre Dame was down 31-39. The Irish were hanging in, but the Cougars had been the more disciplined and physical team. Davis now had fifteen early points, and the Irish had shot 50% from the field, and 44.4% from three at the half.

The Irish came out of the half strong, trailing 39-45 at the 15:56 mark. Njie grabbed several rebounds and was going at it in the post with Houston forward J’Wan Roberts.

Notre Dame went on a 6-0 run to force a Houston timeout with 13:40 remaining in the second half after a Shrewsberry three and a Davis layup.

Up to that point, the Irish had gone on 6+ minutes without a field goal after forcing a lot of contested shots. However, it was only a five point game at the 7:21 mark, as both defenses had played physical and strong.

Houston would pull away after Emanuel Sharp hit a forty foot three pointer, and put a dagger into Notre Dame's comeback hopes. The Irish had to play the foul game and ultimately the Irish would be unable to close the gap

Notre Dame stayed competitive in a tough loss to Houston, 54-65. Davis and Shrewsberry both had double figures for the Irish in the loss. Notre Dame played solid and showed many good strides this game, especially with the absence of Markus Burton. The Irish ultimately lost the game due to going on a six minute scoring drought in the second half. They will take on Creighton on Saturday at 1:00 PM EST in their final game in the Players Era Festival on truTV.
