Irish Hockey Set For Showdown With Penn State At Wrigley Field

On August 15, the Big Ten and MLB's Chicago Cubs announced the schedule for their 2025 outdoor showcase, aptly named “2025 Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series.” The Irish are set to face Penn State on the opening day of the series, slated for Jan. 3, 2025.

The contest will mark Notre Dame’s fourth outdoor game in the modern era. It will also be the Irish’s second outdoor game in Chicago as they participated in the “Hockey City Classic” at Soldier Field in 2013. Notably, the No. 12-ranked Irish took down No. 3 Miami (Ohio) in a thrilling matchup.

The most recent outdoor game Notre Dame played was in 2019 at Notre Dame Stadium. In that contest, the Irish were upset by Michigan.

This 2025 meeting at Wrigley will also mark Notre Dame's second outdoor game at an MLB stadium, after the blue and gold fell to Boston College at Fenway Park in 2014.

For this matchup, both the Irish and Nittany Lions are coming off somewhat disappointing seasons given their high expectations entering their respective campaigns. But despite the underwhelming results, this should be a great matchup as both remain two of the Big Ten’s premier programs. They also appear set for a rebound performance this upcoming season.

The other games slated for ‘The Frozen Confines’ include Ohio State versus Michigan and Wisconsin against Michigan State (both men and women).

Wrigley Field and the city of Chicago will be ready for this Big Ten extravaganza being just a few days removed from hosting the NHL’s Winter Classic. Tickets for the general public are slated to go on sale August 30, as Big Ten hockey fans from all over the midwest should be filling up Wrigley for "The Frozen Confines."
